Xbox reportedly cancels PS5 port of Gears of War: E-Day
A reporter on a livestream said Xbox recently canceled the PlayStation 5 port of Gears of War: E-Day days before it was due to appear at an Xbox showcase.
Industry reporter Jeff Grubb reported on a livestream that Xbox canceled the PlayStation 5 port of Gears of War: E-Day very recently. The decision reportedly came days before the game was scheduled to close an Xbox showcase.
Grubb said the PS5 version had been in development until the cancellation and described the change as abrupt. He linked the decision to a renewed focus on platform-exclusive releases within Xbox.
The Coalition is developing E-Day for Microsoft’s first-party lineup. According to the report, work on a PS5 port had been underway following last year’s release of Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation 5. If accurate, the cancellation would leave E-Day among the few current Microsoft first-party titles not confirmed for PS5.
On the livestream, Grubb said: “Gears of War: E-Day was gonna be on PS5, but it’s not anymore. That just happened, that’s a decision that just got made. They’re going backwards on this stuff, where it’s like, ‘this battle doesn’t make any sense,’ and now they’re like ‘exclusives, to what, sell another 20 million Xboxes?'”
Xbox leadership has recently discussed a greater focus on exclusive content under new executive oversight. Microsoft has previously committed to bringing titles such as Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable to PlayStation 5.
Microsoft, Xbox and The Coalition have not issued an official statement confirming or denying the reported cancellation. The claim is based on a single livestream report and remains unverified.
Gears of War is a long-running franchise developed by The Coalition after Microsoft acquired the IP. The series originated on Xbox platforms, and Microsoft has released Gears titles on other systems, including the PS5 port of Reloaded.
