Xbox Reportedly Cancels PS5 Release of Gears of War: E-Day

Xbox reportedly reversed plans to bring Gears of War: E-Day to PS5 after a late internal decision, sources say; a PEGI PS5 rating and a reported PS5 SKU indicate development had progressed.

Xbox has reportedly canceled the planned PlayStation 5 release of Gears of War: E-Day after an internal decision made very recently, according to industry sources. The reversal ends earlier plans to deliver the title on Sony’s console.

Jeff Grubb reported the decision was taken within weeks or days of an Xbox Showcase where Gears of War: E-Day was expected to close the presentation. A separate tipster using the handle billbil-kun reported that a physical PS5 SKU exists and that pre-orders will open on Xbox and PC immediately after the showcase.

European ratings board PEGI listed a PS5 rating for Gears of War: E-Day, indicating a PlayStation submission had been made. The presence of that classification suggests work on a PS5 build had reached the stage required for regional certification.

The Coalition is developing the title. The Gears franchise appeared on PS5 last year with a Reloaded release. Microsoft has previously announced some first-party projects for PlayStation, including entries in the Halo and Fable series. Asha Sharma, a recent Xbox executive appointment, has made public comments related to distribution of first-party games.

Grubb reported, “Gears of War: E-Day was gonna be on PS5, but it’s not anymore. That just happened, that’s a decision that just got made.” The tipster billbil-kun added that a physical PS5 SKU exists and that pre-orders will open on Xbox and PC soon.

Microsoft, The Coalition and PlayStation have not issued public confirmation of the reported cancellation. No details have been released about how the decision will affect launch timing, marketing plans or existing retail listings.
