Xbox returns to ‘case-by-case’ exclusivity after Showcase

At its Xbox Showcase, Microsoft said platform decisions will be made “case-by-case,” cancelling the PS5 release of Gears of War: E-Day and making Clockwork Revolution a console exclusive.

At its recent Xbox Showcase, Microsoft announced that future console exclusivity will be decided “case-by-case.” The company confirmed the PlayStation 5 version of Gears of War: E-Day has been cancelled and that Clockwork Revolution will be released as a console exclusive. Microsoft said these changes are not timed exclusivity.

Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, addressed the policy on the Gamertag Radio podcast. He said major multiplayer and live-service titles will remain multiplatform, the company will honour previously announced platform commitments, and when Microsoft announces a release date it will also announce the platforms. He summarized the approach as “case-by-case.”

Microsoft’s communications for Gears of War: E-Day described the single-player campaign as setting the scene while noting the franchise’s multiplayer identity. A developer update following the Showcase outlined a live-service-style roadmap for the title. Those details prompted questions about how Microsoft will classify projects that mix campaign content with ongoing multiplayer or live-service elements.

The company has cited prior commitments to explain continued PlayStation versions of titles such as Fable and Halo: Campaign Evolved. Microsoft has not announced platform plans for several recently revealed single-player projects, including Senua and Spyro: A Realm Beyond.

Earlier in the generation, Xbox leadership had shifted away from calling games console exclusives following a public message from the company in 2024. Since then, Microsoft has continued to acquire publishers and studios and to invest in game development; those deals and investments affect where it can release future titles.

The Showcase announcements and Booty’s comments prompted reactions from industry observers and some PlayStation owners, who described the guidance as creating uncertainty about which Xbox Game Studios releases will appear on rival platforms. Microsoft said additional interviews and statements will follow the Showcase and indicated further clarification may be released in the coming days.
