Xbox CEO: Exclusives needed, but strategy under review

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma says platforms need exclusive content, but Xbox is reviewing exclusivity to balance audience reach with its platform role.

In a 15-minute interview last night, Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma described platforms as needing exclusive content and services. She said Xbox is reevaluating exclusivity to balance audience reach with its growing role as a platform.

Sharma framed the issue as a tension between publishing and platform roles. “We’re the number two publisher in the world, and in order to be a great publisher you must have your games reach large audiences to play,” she said. She added, “At the same time, we’re increasingly becoming a platform, and in order to have a platform you must have exclusive content and services.”

Sharma said the company is conducting a careful review and will assess each title individually rather than adopting a blanket policy.

In April, Xbox announced it was reevaluating its stance on exclusivity. Sharma declined to provide firm changes or timelines for any new policies.

She outlined several outcomes under consideration, including continuing to make some titles available on other consoles, restricting a subset as platform exclusives, or using timed exclusivity windows for first-party releases.

Sharma pointed to legal and commercial constraints that will affect decisions. Existing contractual obligations tied to recent acquisitions, including Activision Blizzard and Bethesda, must be evaluated alongside audience reach and revenue considerations.

The review is ongoing. Xbox will decide on a title-by-title basis where exclusivity fits strategic aims and where broader distribution serves players and the business better.
