Xbox CEO: World Models Won’t Replace AAA Games
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma says generative AI world models won’t replace 50–80 hour AAA games but will help production pipelines, prototyping and new game formats.
Asha Sharma, chief executive of Xbox, told an interviewer that generative AI world models will not replace 50–80 hour AAA games. She added the systems will be useful in production pipelines, prototyping and creating new game formats.
Sharma, who previously led Microsoft’s CoreAI product, discussed the future of gaming hardware and software and noted that AI has long been part of game development. She pointed out that the graphics processing unit was developed to improve visuals and frame rates rather than to train neural networks.
She described world models as large generative systems that can simulate environments and behaviors. Sharma argued they could enable new types of games but are unlikely to reproduce the scope and depth of complex AAA titles that include detailed economies and social systems.
Comparing the technology to code-assist tools like GitHub Copilot and Codex, Sharma suggested world models might produce compact, parameter-defined experiences and used Vampire Survivor as an example of a title with clear parameters. For economies, matchmaking and social dynamics, she called the challenge a systems problem that requires coordination across many parts of a game.
Reflecting on her first 100 days as Xbox CEO, she said she had come to appreciate the depth and complexity of art and signaled a cautious approach to applying AI where it could change core creative direction or gameplay mechanics.
Sharma listed developer uses for generative AI: accelerating iteration, assisting prototyping and producing experimental or smaller-scale formats. She added that while AI may enable new genres, building long-form, tightly tuned AAA experiences will remain primarily human-driven in the near term.
