Xbox Drops CoPilot After Low Console Interest
Asha Sharma removed CoPilot division-wide in early May-ending mobile support and canceling planned console integration-citing limited interest from console players.
Asha Sharma, head of Xbox, announced in early May that Microsoft CoPilot has been removed across the division. The change ends CoPilot support on mobile and cancels previously planned integration for Xbox Series X and Series S consoles.
CoPilot had been presented as an in-game assistance tool that could step in with AI when players were stuck. Integrating the feature with console interfaces and game systems required additional development work.
Sharma explained the decision during a public appearance, saying console players “aren’t excited about that experience” and that she must prioritise where the team invests. She added that features should solve clear problems for gamers before release.
Asked about Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s view, Sharma said the choice was made within Xbox and that Nadella has given her latitude to set priorities. “It was an Xbox decision. He’s given me latitude to make the best decisions for our players,” she said.
Sharma highlighted other AI work the division will pursue, naming neural rendering as an example. “I think neural rendering is a great opportunity for us to invest in that. It helps upscale, it helps the footprint on your device so you can get better graphics,” she said.
The CoPilot listing has been removed from the Xbox Player Voice site and did not attract large public requests for revival. Xbox executives have said resources freed by canceling the integration can be redirected to technical improvements that affect console graphics and system performance.
Xbox leadership now plans to focus AI efforts on areas that enhance visuals and device efficiency rather than on in-game assistance that drew limited interest from console players.
