Xbox trials ‘Game Disc’ label on select physical cases

Xbox is testing a gray ‘Game Disc’ label on the bottom bar of some physical game cases, spotted on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, Alien: Rogue Incursion and EA Sports UFC 6.

Xbox has begun testing a gray ‘Game Disc’ label on the information bar at the bottom of several upcoming physical game cases. Images of cases for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, Alien: Rogue Incursion and EA Sports UFC 6 showing the wording circulated online this week.

Observers on forums and image posts noticed a small gray strip along the lower edge of the cover art with the phrase ‘Game Disc.’ The label currently appears on select Xbox-branded physical releases rather than across all announced titles.

Some upcoming games, such as Forza Horizon 6, 007 First Light and LEGO Batman, continue to use their existing case designs without the new wording. The mix of designs suggests the label is being applied selectively or that packaging for certain games was finalized before the change.

The gray bottom bar itself is not new for Xbox cases. Publishers have used that space in recent years for brief consumer notices, including phrases such as ‘Requires Internet’ and short icons indicating downloads or online features.

The literal phrase ‘Game Disc’ has not been common on recent packaging and appears in the new images to indicate a physical disc is included with the purchase. The wording is limited to the small bar at the bottom of the cover art in the examples seen.

Neither Xbox nor the games’ publishers have issued an official statement explaining the purpose, scope or rollout plan for the label. Packaging art can change late in production, and publishers sometimes apply new wording or icons only to certain SKUs, regions or print runs.

Online reaction to the ‘Game Disc’ wording included requests for clearer, standardized language on cases so buyers can quickly determine whether a purchase includes a physical disc, a download code, or other media. It remains unclear whether the label will become standard across all Xbox-branded physical releases, be limited to specific editions or regions, or be part of a broader update to packaging guidelines.
